Williams Sonoma’s San Francisco campus workplace uplift
A thoughtful workplace uplift that enhances functionality while preserving brand and architectural heritage.
Williams Sonoma’s San Francisco headquarters brings together teams from Pottery Barn, Mark & Graham, Rejuvenation, and GreenRow across five historic waterfront buildings, supported by a central test kitchen. Each building has its own architectural character, shaped by industrial detailing, natural light, and long established creative ways of working.
Athena Blue’s role was to refine the interiors in a way that supported collaboration and day to day usability, while keeping the identity of the campus intact. The focus was on considered uplift rather than reinvention, ensuring the spaces continued to reflect the brand’s craft, culture, and pace.
- Working across five historic waterfront buildings, each with different architectural conditions and constraints.
- Balancing uplift and modernisation with the need to preserve heritage character and brand identity.
- Aligning multiple brand teams with distinct workflows, priorities, and space requirements.
- Coordinating upgrades to a live test kitchen used by chefs, product teams, and brand leaders.
- Sequencing works across multiple buildings to minimise disruption and maintain day-to-day usability.
- Improved usability: Spaces that feel brighter, clearer, and more intuitive to use.
- Preserved character: Heritage elements and industrial detailing retained across the campus.
- Enhanced collaboration: Work environments better aligned to creative and cross‑disciplinary workflows.
- Modernised test kitchen: A space that supports efficient testing, product development, and brand storytelling.
- Cumulative impact: Targeted improvements across multiple buildings delivering meaningful overall change.
This project demonstrates how thoughtful uplift, delivered with sensitivity to heritage and brand identity, can significantly improve performance and experience without changing the essence of a place.
