Designing a lounge experience grounded in place
A hospitality-led lounge environment designed to reflect local context while supporting comfort, flow, and high passenger volumes.
Qantas wanted its Hong Kong Lounge to feel grounded in the city it serves. Rather than relying on familiar aviation or hospitality cues, the brief focused on translating Hong Kong’s contrast of intensity and calm into a space that supports travellers arriving, departing, and pausing between journeys.
The long, linear floorplate presented an opportunity to create a layered experience. Design decisions were guided by how people move, where they pause, and how different zones could support dining, relaxation, and quiet retreat throughout the day. The result is a lounge that balances strong architectural expression with comfort, durability, and operational efficiency.
- Linear floorplate: Breaking down a long space into smaller, human-scale zones without disrupting flow.
- High passenger volumes: Supporting dining, bar service, and relaxation across peak and off-peak periods.
- Design and durability balance: Achieving strong architectural character while meeting operational and maintenance requirements.
The completed lounge delivers an experience that feels distinctly connected to Hong Kong, offering travellers both energy and respite within a busy airport environment.
Key outcomes include:
- Clear zoning: Guests move intuitively between active and quiet areas.
- Sense of privacy: Moments of retreat created within a high-traffic setting.
- Flexible dwell times: Spaces supporting both short visits and longer stays.
- Material warmth: A balance of raw and refined finishes creating comfort and a sense of arrival.
This project highlights how a clear design narrative, grounded in local context, can elevate hospitality environments and create meaningful, memorable guest experiences.
