Reconfiguring a workplace floor to improve flow and usability

Within LinkedIn’s 222 2nd Street building in San Francisco, the 13th floor was reconfigured to improve circulation and better position shared amenities. The project focused on resolving spatial constraints so the floor could support both daily use and hosted sessions more effectively.

Project size

The 13th floor at 222 2nd Street presented an opportunity to improve how the space functioned within the existing building. The previous layout created friction around the elevator stack and limited how shared amenities operated throughout the day.

The project focused on improving the layout rather than adding new programme. Key amenities were repositioned, circulation paths clarified, and the configuration refined to reduce congestion and support both daily activity and hosted sessions.

Athena Blue partnered with LinkedIn’s workplace and facilities teams through planning and delivery, with Senior Program Manager Tabitha McCallum leading the tenant improvement and ensuring alignment across design, vendors, and operational readiness.

CHALLENGES
  • Everyday use versus events: Supporting daily movement and informal connection while accommodating larger gatherings.
  • Spatial flow: Positioning the coffee bar and shared spaces within the constraints of the existing elevator stack.
  • Base building coordination: Aligning layouts, services, and acoustics with facilities and engineering requirements.
  • Operational simplicity: Ensuring the space remained easy for internal teams to activate and manage.
OUTCOMES

The refurbished 13th floor now operates as a natural gathering point within the 222 2nd Street building, supporting everyday engagement without adding complexity.

Key outcomes include:

  • Social anchor: A clear movement and connection point within the building.
  • Flexible spaces: Rooms that adapt easily between informal use and hosted events.
  • High daily engagement: Teams using the space confidently throughout the day.
  • Operational alignment: Smooth integration with base building systems and facilities planning.
SUMMARY

This project highlights how a considered reconfiguration of an existing workplace floor can resolve circulation constraints, improve usability, and strengthen operational alignment within a standalone office building.
