Creating a campus hub for connection and everyday use

As LinkedIn’s San Francisco campus evolved, the 13th floor was reimagined as a central hub that supports movement, connection, and everyday gathering. The project focused on creating an amenity-rich space that feels intuitive to use, while adding meaningful value to the wider workplace.

Located at the centre of LinkedIn’s San Francisco campus, the 13th floor at 222 2nd Street plays an important role in how people move through and experience the workplace. Previously configured as a traditional neighbourhood floor, analysis highlighted an opportunity to create a more amenity-rich environment that supported connection, belonging, and individuality.

Working closely with LinkedIn’s workplace team, Athena Blue helped reshape the floor into a social, flexible hub that feels welcoming and easy to use. The focus was on atmosphere and movement rather than over-programming, ensuring the space could support both everyday activity and hosted sessions. Close coordination with building facilities and engineering teams ensured decisions aligned with base building requirements and long-term operations.

Tabitha McCallum led the tenant improvement, coordinating design, vendors, and operational readiness to help the floor function as an active and well-integrated part of the campus.

CHALLENGES
  • Everyday use versus events: Supporting daily movement and informal connection while accommodating larger gatherings.
  • Spatial flow: Positioning the coffee bar and shared spaces within the constraints of the existing elevator stack.
  • Base building coordination: Aligning layouts, services, and acoustics with facilities and engineering requirements.
  • Operational simplicity: Ensuring the space remained easy for internal teams to activate and reset.a
OUTCOMES

The refurbished 13th floor now operates as a natural gathering point within LinkedIn’s San Francisco campus, supporting everyday engagement without adding complexity.

Key outcomes include:

  • Central hub: A clear social and movement anchor for staff across the campus.
  • Flexible spaces: Rooms that adapt easily between informal use and hosted events.
  • High daily engagement: Teams using the space confidently throughout the day.
  • Seamless integration: Smooth operation within base building systems through early coordination.
SUMMARY

This project highlights how amenity-led workplace hubs can strengthen connection and culture when simplicity, hospitality, and ease of use guide decision making.
